Best 357 mag load for deer

you can't go wrong with the 357 or the 44! but for the 30 bucks for a reamer rental go to the max. you never will regret it. you use the same dies and the 180 pointed nose bullet is great in it. Even if you don't load hotter than the mag in the max the 180 fits better. Go to Mike Bellm's site and look at what he does with the max. I too killed several with the old 158gr Gold dot & it was as good as it gets in the 357. Out of a rifle/carbine it shouldn't be a problem. No 357 experience, but used Magtech SJFP in 44 Mag on deer. The .45C and .44mag loads have twice the knock out rating of the best .357mag load, and when it comes to carrying a gun/ammo combo to be used on critters that can eat you, more is always better.

Careful load selection and good shot placement are far bigger factors, than any power difference between these cartridges. I am a great proponent of the 30-30 Winchester, but it is nowhere near as versatile as the 357 Magnum in a rifle or pistol. The 357 round is substantially cheaper to buy, reload for and specialty loads abound.
